The Students' Association of Southern Methodist University (SMU) is comprised of the University's currently enrolled students. Established in 1915, Student Senate represents the Students' Association within the University governance structure. Among its many responsibilities, Senate initiates action on student concerns, adopts the Student Code of Conduct, provides student scholarships, and is responsible for the appropriation of funds to student organizations.

Student Senate meets weekly during the fall and spring semesters. Meetings are open to the public, and students are encouraged to attend and voice their opinions and concerns. Senate is comprised of the Student Body Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Graduate Affairs Officer), the Parliamentarian, Chief of Staff, Speaker of the Senate, Committee Chairs, one elected senator for every 300 students enrolled in each school, and general members who sit on one of Student Senate's ten committees.

The Student Senate Office is located on the third floor of the Hughes-Trigg Student Center in Suite 300. Student Senators maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to students. Meet the members who represent you and work for you on SMU's Student Senate!

The purpose of Student Senate is” to establish a forum to represent all students, act as a communicative body among the students, administration, and faculty, protect the rights of students by ensuring a student voice in every decision-making process of the university, establish policies which govern the actions of students, and promote opportunities for intellectual growth.”
